No built-ins? No problem! Today I’m sharing my progress in our cozy modern living room. I recently styled our TV wall with affordable decor to create a pretty and functional space, without built-ins. While I would love to add shelving to this room someday, right now I am making this large wall work! If you have a similar setup, or are just looking for modern coastal design inspiration, I hope you find this post helpful. I’ll be sharing media consoles and budget friendly finds for decorating around your TV.

If you have an open concept home with a large TV wall like ours, you probably share my priority of storage. We solved this problem a little over a year ago with our budget friendly media console! Previously we had a smaller cabinet and it looked so tiny against this wall. One of the most important things I have learned about interior design is the importance of scale, and generally: go big! If you are looking for a wide media console with lots of storage like ours, check out all of the details here. If you are shopping for a smaller space or prefer a different look, here are a few finds:

TV Wall Decor: Filling Out the Corners

A recent addition to our living room, this 8′ faux olive tree has replaced our Christmas tree! We had a different olive tree previously but again, the scale was too small. It did not fill out the space next to the TV and it always bothered me. The larger tree still feels airy but the extra height and width make a big difference (check out this post to compare).

On the left side, I wanted to include something to warm up the corner near our family photo gallery wall. I have been loving this bamboo blanket ladder for a while, but was concerned it would be too short. I ended up ordering it anyway, and solved that problem by placing stacked canned goods under the feet of the ladder. Easy fix! I love how the curved top breaks up all of the rectangles in this space.

Other Living Room Updates

Nothing big has changed here, I’ve just enjoyed styling a few new pieces, such as the blue linen pillow and gold vase (size small). I am hoping to add a light fixture to this room though, which I shared in my living room design plan.

  1. Hi Caitlin, looking to make the same tv stand. Just wondering if you found the tv too high since it’s a taller media console?

    1. Hi Ashley! The tv height works great for us, but it may feel different based on the size of your room. I would measure out the height of the console on your wall, and then use painter’s tape to test where the tv would be to make sure it works for you!

  2. Hi, thank you for sharing this post. I love the simple yet beautiful look of the room, and especially how you arrange the TV wall. Could you share the brand/model information for your sectional as well?

Do you see a brown espresso console cabinet like below would work as well?
