The key creating a beautiful space for a young girl (that will age well into the teen years) is to mix in neutral colors and classic design elements. That way, you can simply swap out bedding or artwork, instead of completely redecorating the room year after year.

I wrote this post after completing this design process for my daughter’s bedroom! Her space features white walls, neutral wallpaper, pink velvet curtains, vintage artwork, and cottage decor for an elevated, designer look.

1. Girls Bedroom Color Palette

The first step to planning girls bedroom is to choose a color palette. Think about her personal style and favorite toys, and choose colors accordingly.

For my daughter’s room, I decided to stick with white walls and bring in her favorite color with other elements such as curtains and bedding. My daughter loves a pink color scheme, so I mixed that with neutral tones to create a big girl room that will grow up with her.

In addition, you can include your child in choosing a paint color for her bedroom! If you want to maintain some control over the final look (and avoid very bright colors), narrow down the options and share three to five paint colors that you can live with 😉 

2. Bed Ideas for a Girls Room

One of the biggest purchases for a girls bedroom is the bed itself. Consider what will work best for your child and the room. Some ideas include:

• Bunk bed
• Trundle bed
• Canopy bed
• Daybed
• Wooden spindle bed
• Metal spindle bed
• House shaped bed
• Upholstered bed
• Cute headboard

For my daughter’s room, I chose this upholstered bed (cream, size full). I highly recommend it for kids learning to sleep in a big kid bed because it is low to the ground and the headboard is soft–no bumped heads! In addition, it is stylish and will last for years to come.

3. Cozy Girls Room Bedding and Pillows

Now it is time to choose bedding! This is a simple and affordable way to let your child help decorate the space. You can even stick with neutral or white bedding and bring in the color palette through decorative pillows and throw blankets.

For my daughter’s room, I ordered a pink block print quilt for a cottage aesthetic. It pairs so well with the soft pink blanket and floral throw pillow that my daughter already had. Here are similar girls bedroom ideas for bedding: floral quilt, mauve pillows, floral pillow, pink blanket.

4. Pink Velvet Curtains for a Girls Bedroom

Next for girls bedroom ideas, colorful velvet curtains are the perfect way to make a statement, on a budget! Previously we had white curtains which were okay, but not very cozy. Velvet curtains add so much visual warmth to the space, and my daughter loves the pink color (wild rose).

5. Vintage Inspired Wall Art

Using vintage artwork in a girl’s room is a great way to elevate the space and make it feel classic but whimsical at the same time. I had this Sunrise By the Sea I vintage landscape printed and framed by Frame It Easy (26×11, gold Granby).

Finally, I recently worked with Collection Prints on Instagram to add their Foraged Flowers still life print over my daughter’s IKEA dresser. The muted green and and neutrals are just perfect! This is a 20×30 floating canvas with a natural frame.

6. Botanical Girls Bedroom Wallpaper

Next up for girls bedroom ideas: create an accent wall! One option is to use wallpaper as a focal point behind the bed. I installed this peel and stick fern leaves wallpaper two years ago and it makes a basic bedroom feel unique. I especially love the minimalist pattern and neutral colors! For the colors, I ordered a custom color way: white leaves and a “mist” background.

In addition, you could do a wallpapered ceiling, wall mural, or picture frame molding for a girls bedroom!

7. Aesthetic Styled Book Ledges

Is there anything more cozy than a library? I love using IKEA book ledges (similar from Amazon) in kids bedrooms because they are both functional and decorative, and add a cozy vibe. It is also fun to swap out the books seasonally. Here I used kids books with a pastel color scheme. 

8. Girls Bedroom Cozy Reading Nook

Creating a cozy spot for reading is always a good idea for a child’s room. I chose this slouchy lounge chair from Target in textured mushroom because we have the same chairs in our living room and love them. The chair is big enough for my daughter and I to sit next to each other and read books at bedtime.

9. Faux Flowering Cherry Blossom Tree

If you saw my design plan for this cozy girls bedroom, you’ll know that I had picked out a different artificial tree, but my daughter wanted pink 😉 I can’t blame her and think this 6 ft cherry blossom tree looks pretty cute!

10. Girls Bedroom Ceiling Light Fixture

Next up, when designing a girls bedroom you may need to choose a ceiling light. This is a simple way to add character to any room. I decided to choose a boho style fandelier since it is both cute and functional.

11. Natural Rattan Doll Crib

Every time I share this rattan doll crib I receive questions about it. I will admit that it was a splurge–I got it for my daughter a few Christmases ago. Although they are an investment, natural rattan toys and decor can be a great choice. They are made of a sustainable material and add an organic vibe.

12. Whimsical Wooden Dollhouse

Speaking of Christmas, my daughter just received this large wooden dollhouse and we had to find a home for it! Her cube organizer was here, but we moved it into the closet. I know she will enjoy the dollhouse for years to come, and bonus: it is it is adorable decor for a kids bedroom.

Note that I cleaned the dollhouse for photos, but it is typically home to about fifteen Barbies who enjoy partying in the pool, elevator, and various rooms at all hours of the day and night, lol!

13. Blush Area Rug for a Girls Room

Whether your girl’s bedroom has hardwood flooring or carpet, area rugs help create a focal point and add coziness. My daughter’s room has a blush pink area rug that pulls the color palette together (and still feels pretty neutral). Here are some of my favorite rugs!

If you are designing an older girls or teenager’s bedroom, consider including a study area for homework and projects. This is something I may add to my daughter’s room as she gets a little older, but I do have an office nook in my bedroom with a gallery wall if you would like to see an example!

Finally, with any kids room it is important to include an organization system to help keep things tidy. One of my go to choices that offers so much storage is a cube organizer! We moved this one into the closet once Santa brought the dollhouse, but it is still going strong and holds so many books and toys.
