Cozy Gaming Setup Ideas: Create an Aesthetic Desk

This post is all about creating a cozy gaming setup!

I have loved playing cozy games since I was a kid. From the original Animal Crossing on Gamecube, to New Horizons and Stardew Valley on Nintendo Switch.

Lately I’ve been getting into playing games on my computer using Steam, so I wanted to create a cozy gaming space at my standing desk.

Keep reading for cozy desk setup ideas, including ambient lighting, wall decor, and comfortable chair options!

Cozy Gaming Setup Furniture

The first step to a cozy gaming space is choosing furniture. For my desk setup, I am working with what I already had in my closet office. Here are some ideas in case you are shopping for a chair or desk!

Comfortable Chair for Cozy Gaming

If you are in the market for furniture, a comfortable gaming chair is a great place to start. Comfy seating will make your gaming experience more relaxing.

One option is to choose an ergonomic gaming chair with adjustable height settings. I have my eye on this chair from Amazon which comes in aesthetic colors and looks so comfortable.

Alternatively, you can choose a rolling dining chair like mine if you do not need the adjustable features. I like that my chair is cozy without the ergonomic chair look.

However, I will say that the height of the seat is a little low for me. I am planning to add a seat cushion to make sure that I don’t strain my neck looking up at my monitor.

If you just want to dress up your existing chair, try a cute seat cushion like a flower or biscuit.

Standing Desk for Cozy Gaming

Secondly, a cozy gaming setup needs a desk. I already had this electric standing desk in my office, and it is perfect for gaming too. I try to stand at intervals throughout my workday, and sometimes it is nice to stand if you are gaming for long hours as well.

My desk is black, but you can also choose a white or wood look standing desk to match your personal taste. Many standing desks are electric, but you can find hand crank models as well.

Ottoman or Footrest

Next, it is nice to have an ottoman under your desk for resting your feet. A simple white boucle ottoman is cute because it adds texture and coziness. But you can also try a colorful ottoman, or a fun shape like this mushroom stool!

Monitor Stand

Finally, I recently added this monitor stand from IKEA to my desk setup and love it! It came already assembled, you just slide the wooden drawer into the metal base. The drawer has divided sections that are perfect for cables and office supplies.

I went with a budget friendly option, but I also love the look of this wooden monitor stand by Grovemade. It is more expensive, but made of solid wood to last.

Cozy Gaming Setup Lighting

Secondly, one of the key elements of a cozy gaming room is lighting. Here are some ideas!

Ambient Lighting

When it comes to creating a cozy atmosphere for gaming, you cannot beat ambient lighting. A simple way to accomplish this is by using a desk lamp with a smart bulb. That way you can choose cool or warm lighting, and adjust the brightness level.

Alternatively, you can use a lamp or wall light to create a warm glow. I used this cloud light from IKEA that attaches to the wall. These wall lights from Amazon are another great option that cycle through three color temperatures.

Colorful Lighting

Want to add some vibrant lighting to your desk area? There are several ways to go about this.

I decided to use a Philips Hue Light Bar on the back of my computer, since we already use the lightbulbs in other rooms and have a Hue Bridge. Right now I only have one light bar, but you connect up to three bars to display multiple colors at one time.

For a fully immersive gaming setup, you can also invest in the Hue Play Sync Box to make the lights respond to your screen. It’s expensive and not something I plan to buy anytime soon, but it’s nice that I could upgrade my setup in the future.

There are also Hue Gradient Lightstrips that attach to the back of your monitor and display multiple colors at one time.

Of course, you can also purchase colorful lighting from other brands! These smart bulbs are more affordable and highly rated on Amazon. But I wanted to share my Hue setup in case you are considering it!

Neon Lights

Finally, try using an LED neon light for a cozy gamer aesthetic. This neon cloud light is so cute and it comes in different colors. You can also order custom neon lights on Etsy.

Cozy Gaming Setup Decor

And now for my favorite part: cozy gamer aesthetic decorations!

Wall Shelves

Back when I shared my closet office for the first time, I had already installed these wall shelves. Shelves are perfect for a cozy room because you can display your favorite art and collections without taking up space on the desktop.

I used these scalloped shelves and painted them to match my wall color (Woodland Sage). Some other cute options include rattan shelves or clear acrylic shelves. Or, try this little cloud shelves for something extra cute.

Wall Pegboard

Once I knew I wanted to give my office more of a cozy gamer aesthetic, I decided to add a wooden pegboard to the wall.

This pegboard has mini shelves for a few trinkets, plus lots of pegs for hanging cables, headphones–or you know, your Tamagotchi. The important things! It was easy to install and I love the wood tone look.

Honestly I had my eye on the Skadis pegboard from IKEA, but it wasn’t currently available to ship to my area. It’s such a great one though, and a lot of people use the longer hooks to display mechanical keyboards.

Wall Art Collage

For a focal point behind my monitor, I decided to use washi tape to hang a collage of cute artwork. This is a great way to add a personal touch to your cozy gaming setup on a budget!

My favorite place to find art prints is Etsy. I typically go for digital art that I print myself at home, because it’s easy to swap them out whenever I feel like it. But I have also ordered physical prints from some favorite artists.

Here are my favorite art shops on Etsy:

(I linked my exact wall art at the bottom of this post.)

Pixel Art Speaker

This pixel art speaker is such a cute gadget for a cozy setup! In addition to the pre-loaded channels including a clock, light, popular pixel art, and audio visualizer, you can download the app to create your own channels.

Personally I love seeing the designs other people have created! You can also play mini games and design your own pixel art. I chose some premade designs featuring characters from my favorite games and movies.

The speaker also has mechanical keys with RGB lighting, plus a retro little lever.

Digital Clock

For a more practical item, it can be nice to have a digital clock near your computer. Whether I’m working from home or gaming, I prefer not to look at the time on my phone since I often get distracted by notifications or other tasks.

I thought this digital clock was perfect for a cozy gamers aesthetic! You can plug it into your computer or the wall with a USB converter. You can also hang the clock on a pegboard or wall.

Cute and Cozy Collectibles

Finally, you might like to include some collectibles in your cozy gaming space. As you can probably tell, my personal taste is pastel colors, cozy crafts, Pusheen the cat (not affiliate–I wish!–but I just need to share the Pusheen shop with you), mushrooms, and witchy vibes.

On my wall shelves, I included a few model horses from my childhood, and a Totoro that I crocheted years ago when amigurumi was a popular hobby. (Should I get back into it?)

I only haven’t started collecting Squishmallows because I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop! Maybe just some Micromallows wouldn’t hurt? What do you collect?

Cozy Gaming Setup Electronics

Next up, here are some ideas for cozy gaming space electronics. (FYI I do not claim to be an expert here, this is just what I am using currently.)

PC Tower or Console

Experienced gamers may want to build a custom PC. However, you can definitely just use what you have and decide down the road if you need to invest in a high-end computer setup.

I already had my iMac for work (newest version here) and I have found plenty of cozy games to play on Steam for Mac so far. However, it is important to know that some games only run on a PC.

Alternatively, you can make a cozy gaming setup with a console and a monitor. The Nintendo Switch is my personal favorite console because I love games like Animal Crossing, Mario, Stardew, and more recently I’ve been playing Wylde Flowers! You can pair a Nintendo Switch with a monitor for cozy gaming at a desk.

High-Resolution Monitor

Next up, you may want a high-resolution monitor for your cozy gaming setup. Like I mentioned above, I already had my desktop Mac and I like the sleek design of the screen. However, if you playing with a PC tower or console, you will need a monitor.

My husband has this high resolution curved monitor in his office and it’s a nice budget friendly option. Or, compare this one by Samsung. You can also consider dual monitors if you would like a separate screen for streaming.

Mechanical Keyboard

Mechanical keyboards are definitely one of the latest trends and not a necessity. But after eyeing them for a long time, I did end up buying one for myself for Christmas!

This is not a deep dive about mechanical keyboards, but I will share what I purchased. I decided to go with the Keychron V4 Pro QMK/VIA Wireless with brown switches (also on Amazon here). It goes out of stock pretty often but keep checking back.

I paid $109 + $15 shipping from Keychron which I feel was reasonable for the quality of the product. The keyboard has colorful RGB lights and is fully customizable for those who are serious about building mechanical keyboards.

One of my favorite things about a mechanical keyboard is that you can swap out the keycaps! I ordered mine from Moonnkeys on Etsy and had a great experience. The seller even sent me a few freebies.

Here are the keycaps I ordered (I chose clear keycaps):

And here is my cloud wrist rest and desk mat!

Ergonomic Mouse

If you’ve ever enjoyed a long gaming session only to end up with a sore wrist, you might want to consider an ergonomic mouse. I purchased mine a while back for my work from home office and it has been a game changer! The shape allows your wrist to be in a neutral position. It also comes in black or pink!

Noise Cancelling Headphones

Finally, noise cancelling headphones are important for an immersive experience. There are so many options to choose from, at all different price points.

I decided to purchase these Tozo HT2 noise cancelling headphones that are cute and relatively affordable. Personally, I think the sound is amazing! The battery lasts a long time and they have been great for me. Here is my headset / phone stand.
