Need ideas for a modern coastal dining room? Today I’m sharing the reveal of our dining room makeover for the One Room Challenge! This space features a board and batten accent wall, brass chandelier, coastal wall art, white farmhouse table, and black dining chairs.

I can hardly believe how quickly the weeks have flown! We took this dining room from builder grade to designer style thanks to affordable decor, DIY projects, and a few worthwhile investments. I will walk through all of the updates today, but if you want to dig deeper, here are the weekly posts:

A Quick Look Back

before one room challenge spring 2020

Remember this view? This was our dining room before the One Room Challenge began. I was ready to change the blue accent wall, mismatched curtains, and farmhouse light fixture and couldn’t wait to get started!

Modern Coastal Dining Room Mood Board

Tap to see my original mood board for the dining room. As the weeks passed, I made some changes to the design along the way. For example, I decided not to hang oversized artwork in the center of the wall. With the board and batten and chandelier, I felt that it would look too busy.

Instead, I decided on two smaller pieces of art stacked on the left side to balance the window on the right. I also swapped the wishbone chairs from my original plan to these black dining chairs.

Modern Coastal Dining Room Reveal

And without further ado, here is the dining room reveal!

Can you believe that this is the same space? It feels so much more intentional with the area rug, wall molding, and artwork. I also love the neutral color palette that can transition easily and provide a backdrop for seasonal decor.

Here is a rundown of the updates and projects that made this dining room makeover a success!

1. Modern Coastal Dining Room Chandelier

Swapping out the light fixture in this space made such a difference. Our previous light (see the before photo above) was a farmhouse drum pendant that was too small for the space. In addition, the old light fixture felt limiting in terms of the design style.

For our coastal dining room makeover, I chose Mitzi’s Tabitha chandelier. I especially love the brass finish and fluted glass shades! The light fixture is both modern and classic, and makes a statement while remaining light and airy. It is the jewelry of our dining room and I cannot stop looking at it!

2. Black Chairs and White Table Combination

Secondly, I decided to keep our white farmhouse extendable dining table because it is sturdy and functional. While it does have a farmhouse vibe with the turned wooden legs, it is also versatile and classic enough to fit any design style.

However, our previous black dining chairs (see before photo above) were poor quality and wobbly. The new black chairs in our dining room are Article’s Rus chairs! They are sturdy and beautiful. For more details, you can tap to see my full review.

3. Board and Batten Accent Wall

The biggest change in this space was the addition of the board and batten accent wall. Check out that post for my inspiration, product details, and measurements!

4. Neutral Wall Color for a Coastal Dining Room

In addition, I decided to change up the accent wall color which was previously blue. I chose Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore which is a light and neutral beige. It provides just a little contrast against the other white walls and warms up the room.

5. Modern Coastal Dining Room Wall Art

For coastal dining room wall art, I chose digital artwork from Collection Prints: Sunrise by the Sea I and Waves II. For frames, I chose the Granby Frame in gold and the Derby Frame in wheat from Frame It Easy! You are able to upload the digital artwork while choosing your frame online.

6. DIY Vintage Stone Vase

Next, the aged stone vase is actually an inexpensive vase that I spray painted and “weathered” to make it look vintage! I think it adds a rustic vibe to the otherwise clean and minimalist look.

7. Modern Coastal Wall Baskets

I found these woven wall baskets at Hobby Lobby, but here is another option! Hanging wall baskets is a great way to add texture and interest to a large wall, and the round shape helps break up all of the clean lines.

8. Vintage Rug for Texture

In addition, the brown vintage rug from Revival warms up the room and adds so much cozy texture. This is my first vintage rug and I know it won’t be my last!

9. Modern Coastal Dining Room Toy Storage

Finally, replacing the bins and restyling our cube organizer made the space so much more pretty and functional. For now, our dining room doubles as a playroom so we need a lot of storage that is easily accessible for kids.

Before and After Photos

Here are a few side by side comparison photos to show how much this space has changed.

Our coastal modern dining room makeover turned out even better than I imagined! I do not think any room in our home will ever be 100% complete, but this space now evokes the casual coastal style that I love.

Thank you so much for your support during the One Room Challenge, spring 2020 edition. I’m so excited to see all of your transformed spaces! Please say hello in the comments so I can see your ORC reveal (if you participated) and thank you for your kind support over the weeks.
