Not sure how to decorate your open concept home? I’ve been there! When we moved into our new build five years ago, I was thankful for a large living room at the center of our house. But it also presented a challenge, since we would see it all day, every day. I wanted it to be both pretty and functional, but I did not know how to handle all of the empty space! Additionally, our TV and media console had to be front and center, which is a common design dilemma. After years of working on this room, I recently completed some of my long term goals! Today I’m excited to be partnering with The Home Depot to share living room decor ideas to create a space that you love. Whether you want to style your media console, fill an empty corner, or simply add coziness to your space, I hope you find these tips helpful.

Living Room Decor Ideas: The Before
Here are a few photos of our living room this spring. I have been working on this space over the years, and there was a lot to love! But also things to work on.
What I liked:
- Creamy white walls
- Newly painted media console
- Window treatments
- Organic modern style
What I wanted to change:
- Fill out the TV wall with picture frame molding
- Swap the light wood coffee table for something darker
- Replace the small lamps and accents on the media console
- Figure out the wall to the left of the TV
- Update decor for a fresh look
Living Room Decor Ideas: DIY Wall Molding
I am a newbie when it comes to DIY home projects involving power tools. However, after seeing several friends install their own wall molding, I wanted to give it a try. I decided to go with picture frame molding because it is a classic style and relatively easy to install.
I’m going to share an in-depth post about how I installed the wall molding in the coming weeks, but wanted to list the products that I used in case you are ready to tackle this project! The Home Depot had everything that I needed to transform our space and bring my vision to life.
Living Room Decor Ideas: Statement Pieces
Once the wall trim was installed, I was ready to work on our decor. Here are my living room decor ideas for elevating your space with statement pieces.
1. Add Texture with a Large Tree
In my opinion, this is the best way to fill out an empty corner in your living room. We previously had an olive tree, so I decided to switch things up with this gorgeous artificial cherry blossom tree. The texture and movement it adds are so good!
2. Swap Accent Tables
Surrounded by white furniture, our light wood coffee table wasn’t working. I wanted more contrast! This walnut coffee table warms up the living room, and the turned spindle legs add a sculptural element. It also arrived fully assembled, which is always a plus for me.
I also added this antique brass end table beside our sofa. It is taller than our old side table which is an upgrade, and the metal adds contrast to the space. Swapping out accent tables is a great way to change the look of your living room without replacing large furniture!
3. Empty Wall? Try an Oversized Mirror.
The wall molding made a huge difference, but I still wanted to find a way to fill out the space to the left of our media console. Our home has archways throughout the main level and I thought this 71″ x 32″ arched mirror was the perfect compliment. My kiddos also love to make faces in it 😉 The mirror reflects our gallery wall so nicely! Can’t get enough of this view.
Living Room Decor Ideas: Accents and Storage
Once you have selected your statement pieces and filled out empty corners, it is time to think about accents. They are great for adding coziness and character with accents, and The Home Depot has so many options!
1. Simply Style a Coffee Table
I like to keep my coffee table decor basic with a large vase and a selection of coffee table books. This ceramic pitcher vase has great texture and won’t fall over if my kiddos bump into the table. Have you noticed I cannot turn off my mom brain?
2. Decorate Around Your TV
As for the media console, I decided to change things up with one large lamp. I have been eyeing this oversized rattan table lamp for months and was excited to add it to our space! Pairing it with this empire shade created a vintage look. A gray planter and charcoal bowl fill out the space below the TV, and I love this wooden chain accent. Finally, these decorative boxes are perfect for remotes.
3. Add Coziness with Pillows and Throws
Is there any decor more fun to shop for than pillows? I love the texture of these tasseled pillows, and this classic plaid. This knotted fringe throw blanket was perfect for the back of our sofa, and also helps keep it clean since our kitchen is only steps away!
4. Don’t Forget Storage
I finished off the left side of the living room with a large basket for extra throws. Pretty baskets are my favorite way to hide toys, slippers, and tablets around our home. You can also try pairing two different baskets for a collected look.
